Conforming to UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund), there are 153 million orphans in world. Each and every day approx. 5,700 children become orphan due to many reasons. There are 29.6 million orphaned in India.
Who is called the "Mother of Orphans"?
Sindhutai Sapkal (Mai) is an Indian social worker and social activist known for her work in nurturing and support orphans children in India.
Sindhutai Sapkal, affectionately known as the ‘Mother of Orphans’ recounts the hardships she faced during her long journey, struggling to come to terms with life.
She is an Indian social activist widely known for her contributions towards raising orphaned children in India.
Born on 14th November in 1948, she grew up in a small village Wardha in Maharashtra. Forced to quit school when she was in 4th class and got married at the tender age of ten, life was never going to be easy.
Abandoned by her husband, she shares how she gave birth to her daughter all by herself in a cow shelter, and subsequently took to begging on the streets in order to survive.
Her life was not so easy, she has remarkably demonstrated that how adversity can bring out the best in you.
She started adopting orphaned children she found and feeding them what little she could, even donating her own biological child to a welfare trust, so she could feed the rest of the children under her care.
Her journey has been one of sacrifice and struggle. She tells us about what the purpose of life means to her, and offers us advice based on the values and lessons she has learnt over many fulfilling decades.
She has nurtured over 1400 orphaned children. She has been honoured with over 273 awards for her dedication and work.
She was recently awarded “Nari Shakti Award 2017”, and others include “Mother Teresa Award” for Social Justice, “Real Heroes Award”, “Shivlila Mahila Gourav Award”
Imagine being a mother to over 1400 children, having 282 sons-in-law, 49 daughters-in-law and hundreds of grandchildren.
The 68-year-old has transformed the lives of over 1400 orphans by giving them a home, support and love that they deserve.
With the help of her daughter Mamata and the first child she adopted, Deepak, Sindhutai runs four orphanages - two for girls and two for boys. She works closely with all of them and is constantly supported by her large family, which is still growing.
She is conferred with various esteemed and prestigious awards that also involve Padma Shri in 2021 in Social Work Category.

Ananth Mahadevan's 2010 Marathi film "Mee Sindhutai Sapkal" is a biopic inspired by the true story of Sindhutai Sapkal. The film was selected for world premiere at the 54th London film festival.
